Maison Assouline on London’s Piccadilly provided the setting for a fascinating lecture by the fashion and lifestyle journalist Susana Martinez Vidal on the iconic artist Frida Kahlo.
Kahlo was also a bold beauty and an avant-garde fashionista, whose timeless sense of style continues to inspire and influence the worlds of fashion, media and art today.
The lecture was part of the inaugural ‘Mayfair & St James’s Literary Festival’ which is taking place this October across some of the area’s most illustrious and historic venues, including The London Library, St James’s Church Piccadilly, Handel & Hendrix Brook Street, the Mayfair Hotel, Crazy Coqs and so on. The packed programme has featured ‘Great Poetry Read by Great Actors’ as part of The Josephine Hart Poetry Hour, art exhibitions, storytelling for children, music, talks and readings.
Frida Kahlo inspired the first fashion editorial that Susana Martinez Vidal produced when she was director of ‘Elle Spain’, and since then she has passionately followed Kahlo’s influence in fashion, music, and culture. After seeing the first-ever exhibition on Frida’s clothing, she was inspired to write this, her first book : Frida Kahlo: Fashion as the Art of Being.
The Mayfair & St James’s Literary Festival is the brainchild of Mayfair Times, the luxury lifestyle monthly magazine which has been serving the people of Mayfair, Marylebone and St James’s for more than 30 years. This year they were honoured to be partnered by The Josephine Hart Foundation which promotes the arts, culture and education.
