An established international footwear business based in western Europe which also owns a state-of-the-art leather development centre.
We were asked to find a Global Commercial Director to leverage their strength in leather and build up a recognisable leather goods and accessories brand. The person would have to create a completely new channel of wholesale distribution, positioning the leather goods category as a credible competitor in the affordable luxury sector.
What intrigued us was this client’s willingness to look at candidates who had built global brands in unconventional ways. They wanted someone who would challenge existing conventions in the company and who would be an inspiring leader, mentoring and developing a strong and agile team who would create change in a positive and successful way. They would need to be entrepreneurial and have the know-how to create this new brand. This would include defining a global sales and distribution strategy across all distribution channels and the development of business practices which would contribute to an improved bottom line.
There were a number of candidates who demonstrated outstanding commercial expertise and who matched many of the requirements of the job, but finding someone with the characteristics, the personality, the ‘je ne sais quoi’ that would fit our client’s demands was more of a challenge.
Through intense networking and recommendations we identified a candidate with proven experience in international business development, a multi-linguist who could implement sales and marketing strategies, channel and category management, and who, moreover, had that real entrepreneurial spirit. The client recognised that this individual really did fit the bill and a successful placement was made.
